Some readers may find it hard to believe that the London police would assign one of its members to be a full-time bodyguard, who, presumably at taxpayer's expense, makes Jessica tea and runs errands with her as well. Give this excellent book a chance!

To think that I almost didn't read this book when I saw that it only received a little more than 2 stars! When I actually read the bad reviews, I discovered that one was due to pricing and the others felt there was too much British terminology. I admit it was somewhat noticeable at first but once things got going, I hardly noticed it.

Jess, our protagonist, seemed a little bit abrasive but she grew on me and I came to admire the way she became quite a force to be reckoned with. Her love for Louis knew no bounds and she became unstoppable.

Once I really got going, I could hardly stand to put the book down. Please don't let the negative reviews and small number of stars stop you from buying this book. I almost did, and I'm so glad that I didn't.

Awesome start stupid finish

This book had me hooked for the first 50 or so pages....after that anyone can figure out the twist. The characters were not well developed, and I've never heard of a character to be asleep so much in a book while containing vital information. I finished the book just to be sure I was right about who took the kid, and then was only left wondering...wouldn't it have made more sense to....well I won't spoil it but you will probably ask yourself the as!e question after you finish reading it.

Challenging Without Being Overly Difficult; Good Balance

I've read an awful lot of science fiction over the years, and recently returned to the genre after a lengthy absence. In doing so, I made a concerted effort to upgrade my reading list and familiarize myself with the new generation of sci-fi writers. My recent experience has been a real revelation. Whereas in the past, most of the science fiction I consumed was very easy to read and understand (Asimov as an example), some of the works I've sampled in the last year or two have quite literally been over my head.

I read Dune (multiple times) many years ago. I proceeded on to the Dune sequels, but after two or three they became so philosophically dense that I lost interest. I recently read Herbert's widely acknowledged masterpiece The Dosadi Experiment and again was forced to admit that I was incapable of appreciating it fully. Ditto for much of Philip Dick's writing.

In an effort to read all joint Hugo/Nebula Award winners, I ran into a few other such works. Some of the new generation of sci-fi writers have published undeniably outstanding novels that I simply couldn't enjoy fully. Charles Stross, Neal Stephenson and Ian McDonald come immediately to mind. These cats are just too intelligent for me to relate to (and I have a post graduate degree!).

Others, such as Joe Scalzi, David Brin and Joe Haldeman crank out easily understood and entertaining work (in the mode of Asimov), but without all the heavy lifting some of the previously cited authors require. All of this to say, that in Peter Hamilton's The Reality Dysfunction I discovered what I felt was a very happy medium: Vastly entertaining, but with just the level of challenge and difficulty that I could master without detracting from my enjoyment of the reading experience. There are some pretty heavy concepts in this novel, yet I never felt that I was lost or over my head. Outstanding example of "hard" science fiction.

One of my science fiction pet peeves are hackneyed alien life forms. Multi armed/legged creatures, insect or other animal like beings, as if alien life forms have to fit into human constructs. Larry Niven's Ringworld is a perfect example (giant cats and Pierson's Puppets). While this novel has some of that, it also has some very intriguing alien life forms which do not fit neatly into our preconceived notions of how an alien may look or behave. It also includes sentient habitats and spaceships, a concept I first encountered in Charles Stross's Saturn's Children.

At over 1,000 pages, and only the first of three books in a series, this is an undertaking that requires a significant time commitment. There are also a dizzying number of plot threads which could be hard to keep straight.
Not the kind of book that you read for a while, put aside and take up again a few weeks later. However, if you're up to the challenge, I don't think you'll be disappointed. On to book two.

3,600 PAGES OF SCI FI AWESOMENESS!!

Peter Hamilton’s “Night’s Dawn” trilogy is an epic space opera of unrivaled proportions. I’ve been reading science fiction for over 50 years and this is the richest and most fascinating trilogy that I have ever encountered. Hamilton is a meticulous author whose descriptions of his universe are so detailed and textured that you feel like you’re watching a movie. Plus, it’s one of the best bargains ever! For the price of three books – “The Reality Dysfunction”, “The Neutronium Alchemist” and “The Naked God” - you get over 3,600 pages of action – the equivalent of nine to twelve normal novels. With most trilogies, I find I’ve started to grow tired of the story before the last novel is complete. Not so with these books. After days of enjoyable reading, my only complaint is that the story did not continue. Yet, it ended with one of the most satisfying conclusions I’ve ever encountered. I cannot recommend these books highly enough!

About the Author
Alfred North Whitehead (1861 1947) was a prominent logician, mathematician and philosopher in the early twentieth century and helped pioneer the 'process philosophy' approach to metaphysics. He was Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University until his retirement in 1937.

1910-13 Edition!

Just to note that this is the 1910-13 Edition, so you're missing the introduction to the 1927 Second Edition, which can be found though in The Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell (Routledge Classics), and 2 new appendixes: Appendix A replacing *9 and an all-new Appendix C.

A landmark book

Principia Mathematica is a landmark book on the elements of mathematics. This edition is the best price I have seen in decades.

Both Whitehead and Russell are known for their insights into philosophy and mathematics. This book, although a mathematics book, is based upon their philosophy of how the universe works. The basic assumption of this book is that symbolic logic can be used to describe the universe. From that starting point they develop the elements of modern mathematics.

This book is meant for those of us nerds who want to understand why mathematics works and how it relates to a philosophy of the universe. Note that this book is heavy on mathematical symbols (which are explained). It can be slow reading, but Whitehead and Russell's insights are stunning.

Actually very instructional

This book is often put on the shelf as a mathematical classic to be shown and not read. However, this book is more than just a historical curiosity, it is actually a great practical study in propositional logic.

The first volume is the rosetta stone of what might look like some arcane language, but it is actually both a practical and philosphical discussion of how to logically approach mathematics.

While their text is not casual, it is conversational as they talk through the process. Their discussion illustrates common fallacies and serve as instruction to the student. It is by no means pleasure reading, but if you really read the text, you will learn alot. At least I am.

About the Author
J. K. Chambers is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Toronto. He is co-editor of The Handbook of Language Variation and Change (with Peter Trudgill and Natalie Schilling-Estes, Wiley-Blackwell, 2002), co-author (with Peter Trudgill) of Dialectology (2nd edition, 1998), and also author of other books and scores of articles. He works extensively as a forensic consultant, and maintains a parallel vocation in jazz criticism, including the prizewinning biography Milestones: The Music and Times of Miles Davis (1998).
