About the Author
Wayne Gretzky, nicknamed “The Great One,” is considered by many to be the greatest hockey player ever. He is the leading scorer in NHL history, and is the only NHL player to total more than two hundred points in one season—a feat he accomplished four times. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held sixty-one separate NHL records (forty regular season, fifteen playoff, and six All-Star)—and still holds most of them today. His honors include 31 Hart, Art Ross, Conn Smythe, Lester B. Pearson, and Lady Byng trophies and awards.

His teams included the Edmonton Oilers (1979–1988, including four Stanley Cups), the Los Angeles Kings (1988–1996, including a Stanley Cup final), the St. Louis Blues (1996), and the New York Rangers (1996–1999). Following his retirement, he became the ninth and final player to be ushered into the Hall of Fame with no waiting period, and the first to have his jersey number retired league-wide.

Among his activities since, he has been minority owner and head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes and executive director of Canada’s 2002 gold medal-winning men’s hockey team, and is a restaurateur, winemaker, and philanthropist with his own Wayne Gretzky Foundation. He lives with his family in Westlake Village, California.

Gretzky Scores Again!

Even the casual hockey fan knows the name and the legend of Wayne Gretzky and it's hard to separate the person from his reputation as The Great One. This is a wonderful book because it celebrates Gretzky's love and reverence for the game by examining the 99 year history of the NHL through the eyes of its greatest player. The stories of the players that made hockey such a wonderful sport through the early years are interspersed with Gretzky's stories of how those players impacted his development as a person and as a player. As such, this book is not only a terrific work of sports history, but also a fabulous autobiography that yields compelling insights into Gretzky himself. Much like Gordie Howe's autobiography, Mr. Hockey, I was left with an overwhelming sense of just how down to earth some sports superstars can be. Rather than extolling their own virtues, these players constantly talk about Gratitude. It's all about how grateful they are to their parents, coaches, teammates and their fans. If you are sick and tired of the typical ego-maniacal professional athlete, read this book for a breath of fresh air.

the content overshadows lack of quality writing

99 is unquestionably the greatest hockey player of all time. the same cannot be said for his writing skill. there is not great flow in his thoughts and at times the chapters feel a bit disjointed. however, the quality of what he writes about is fantastic. i love reading books by some of the greatest sharing their insights and stories and this point certainly satisfies. a must for any hockey fan!

Absolutely amazing work and just what is needed in our world at this time

Melinda Ribner has done it again. This book is exactly what we ALL, men and women, need to read in our time. With extensive research into Midrashim and other rabbinic commentaries of our tradition, she has taken learning about these extraordinary women to a whole new level. Her style of interviewing each of the Biblical Women presented in her book is an amazing idea and truly helps the reader to connect with the Divine Feminine. This is one book no spiritual library should be without.

A must read for our generation

Melinda Ribner has just written a book that I believe is essential in our generation. This is a must read for men and women today. As soon as Melinda Ribner began sharing her understanding of the feminine archetypes as they manifested in the Bible, for the first time in many years, I had a guide and understanding of how becoming aware of both my masculine and feminine energy could help me become a more complete human being. I truly believe that in western culture, many men have so restricted their individual balance that anger, pride, ego and low self-esteem emerged as predominant character traits. I have also observed how many women have pushed aside their feminine energy in favor of their more masculine energy. For both men and wonen this imbalance can lead to a host of emotional, psychological, physical and intellectual challenges. This is why I feel Melinda Ribner's discussion of biblical feminine archetypes is so important because it offers a pathway to help both men and women find their individual balance.'

Bibilical Women

When you read the Bible stories, there is rarely any mention of the wives, daughters or any other women. This book by Melinda Ribner is a series of interview with the Biblical Women, talking from their perspective of the story. Their voices are finally heard.

What I liked was that Melinda's background as counselor comes through during the interviews. Much thought went into these dialogues.

This is a great read.

Roger's Department Store called three times asking if they could close during a storm. Complainant called about neighbor keeping a pet cow in the yard.

Call it "Dialing 911 for Dummies"

Gosh this is a funny book! If you ever wondered what kinds of nonsense clutters up the emergency phone systems, then look no further. You get over 220 pages of short snappy stories about folks whose idea of an "emergency" is ... well ... here are some examples:
having the hiccups ... too few towels in hotel room ... pet parrot flying outside ... not finding an open gas station ... needing a smoke alarm battery ... hunger for a pizza ... neighbor's dog barking ... wondering when is Cinco de Mayo ... checking lottery winners ... not knowing the police phone number
One great story is on page 60:
"Police in Houma, Louisiana, issued a citation in April 1992 to Velma Ann Wantlin for improper use of the 911 emergency line. Wantlin, twenty-eight at the time, called 911 to report the following emergency situation: her husband was preventing her from watching the season finale of Knotts Landing."
Most of the stories and quotes from real callers range from silly to quirky to bizarre. The final chapter relates the actual 911 line chatter in a situation that literally blows up at the end -- a dramatic, sobering way to end the book. (See page 223.)
You'll laugh at these funny phone foibles -- but take a closer look. An emergency is an urgent situation requiring help, and usually it's a matter of life and death. When people tie up the 911 system and the emergency services with stupid or frivolous requests, other people may die as a result.
I particularly appreciate finding this book because it provides the lighter side of some of the serious problems I wrote about in my own book, Dial 911 and Die. Leland Gregory's funny book entertains while it shows what "not" to do with 911.

The Truth About 911

A dispatcher's job can be rewarding, exciting, challenging, and sometimes very humorous. As most dispatchers will tell you the most memorable 911 calls are not necessarily the high-rise fires, suicide interventions, or the ones in which we provide life-saving medical information. It's those strange, unbelievable, stupid, or funny calls we take everyday that make our job worth doing.
After all anyone can save lives. The seasoned dispatcher is the one that can keep from bursting into hysterical laughter when someone calls to tell them that while they were hanging drywall they accidentally slipped and lodged a screwdriver in their rectum, when oh by the way they so happen to be naked at the time. Humor plays a huge role in keeping us sane. We can laugh and joke at just about anything.
Leland Gregory's book is a painful and acurate description of the job of a 911 dispatcher. I don't think there was a call in the book that I haven't taken personally in my career. A must read for anyone considering a 911 career.

I work as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and thought I had heard it all until I read this.
You guys in the states get calls just as crazy as we do here in Australia.
Great for a laugh and also an education on when NOT to call 911 (000).

Okay, Add It To The Shelf If Someone Else Foots The Bill

Most of the time I find myself needing the content in this book to be about 1.5 to 2 times more than I get. Don't get me wrong, there have been plenty of times I found what I wanted, but the book really needed to be thicker (and therefore more expensive) to be the Swiss Army Knife I need. Maybe it should have been a double volume affair. like the Sams "Unix Unleashed" became in its most useful iteration. I dunno.

There are some topics that are simply appetite-whetters too, requiring a further search for information before whatever it is can be of use.

People often say, and in this specific case they are right, that there is no substitute for the Oracle Manual. I guess this was intended as a more detailed quick-start guide than the 2-day admin manuals.

Good, useful, but in no way indispensable.
