not what it was advertised as

This book was very misleading. It was printed in 1938 and contains no new information. many books are republished with new covers on them. Amberly Press is usually much more ethical then this and should have put a "reprint" "classic" something. There is no new information on Elizabeth Woodville offered in this book. I bought my copy and feel sorely cheated

A Calculating Queen

Elizabeth Woodville, also spelled as Wydeville, was the first born child of Sir Richard Woodville and Jacquetta. Her parents would have several children afterwards. Her birth is noted as being in 1437. At an early age Elizabeth was one of four ladies of the bedchamber in Queen Margaret of Anjou's court. Her family was well-respected and favored. Elizabeth was first married to Sir John Grey. He was a commander in the Lancaster army. They had two sons before he died in battle. Her choice in marriage according to the author may have began the intense hatred of her to Earl of Warwick, also known as the King Maker. The Earl of Warwick would be a thorn that scratched them both for many years. As a young widow Elizabeth was noticed by Edward IV. The quick marriage, and it was done in secret, began a lengthy chain of gossip and myth surrounding Elizabeth and her family. The author David MacGibbon has written a wonderful non-fiction work with the focus on what is fact, not fluff.

My Thoughts:
In my opinion it is a breath of fresh air when an author writes on a historical figure, and does not seek to sensationalize on what other's have written before. The movie The White Queen will begin tomorrow on BBC1, America will get to watch this in August on Starz. It is adapted from Philippa Gregory's books, The Cousin's War. Other books have been written as well on Elizabeth Woodville, some author's writing more from their instinct about her, or from what other's had written.
I enjoyed reading MacGibbon's account of Elizabeth Woodville, I feel it is a great beginning point for anyone wanting to read about the true Elizabeth Woodville.
Other notable historical character's such as the Lancaster's, Yorks, Edward IV, Richard III, Earl of Warwick and his two daughter's, and Jane Shore, are in MacGibbon's book.
I felt the author made a point of steering clear of misconceptions about Elizabeth. The author gave the facts about her, and let me see from her actions that it was apparent she was calculating, intelligent, influential, and charming. She used these traits to her advantage, with the main goal of elevating her family and her station.
She was a savvy woman in an age when men ruled, yet she had a unique blend of personality which included bravery, that even if I may not like her as a person, I admire her tenacity.

Disappointing

I wasn't all that impressed with this book. The chapter about sociopaths in the Bible seemed pretty farfetched. Some of the material was good, but a lot of it he was borrowing from another author, so I began to think maybe I should have bought her book. I was disappointed with what I received for the price I paid.

A Different Perspective!

Great book, even though a lot of the material is from other authors, it's brought together in a very practical way. As Christians, we sometimes feel guilty if we don't love everyone, we blame ourselves. This book walks you through how you can forgive people, but also choose not to have them in your life. There is pure evil in this world, not everyone is good. Making a decision to not allow wicked people into your life is life changing for me. Even if it's a blood relative, we must just turn them over to God. Their issues are theirs to work out, not ours. It's between them and God. The people that continue to lay guilt trips at your feet, to keep you enslaved to them and their approval.....we must step out of our own self imposed prison and find freedom. This book helped me do this.

Not Really A Book -- Just a Compilation of Other Books

This book covers a necessary topic, one which has seemed to slip between the cracks. The topic does seem like an oxymoron: Christians and Sociopaths; but, it is more a reality than one can imagine. The church (any denomination) is the perfect breeding ground for Sociopaths and the perfect cover for them. It was good and timely for Conner to address the topic.

Conner dealt with the topic from a 10,000 foot view, but swooped down to take a closer look at certain points. The reading was easy and flowed smoothly.

A serious drawback about this book is that it really is more of a composite of three other books: "The Sociopath Next Door", "Total Forgiveness", and "Love Fraud" plus sections of the Bible, as well as church prayers and catechisms. There actually was not much original writing in the book itself. Most books reference ideas, quotes or whatever -- rather than use them as the main substance of the book.

It is though Conner did not write a book, but just compiled some relevant, appropriate material from other books. Almost plagiarism, except that he gave credit. If I had written a "book" like that for graduate school, I believe that I would not have gotten a very good grade; I might have even flunked the assignment.

That being said, it was a quick read, with some interesting thoughts, especially if one has not read the embedded books. However, the price was too high for the book. Half the price would have been more on target.

I don't think I would recommend this book, unless someone could borrow it or get it for free.

Addams Family source better than any of its successors.

Part of the beauty of the original "Addams Family" tv show, and an aspect of the show that has been almost totally lost throughout the first average animated series, the two okay movies, and the most recent abysmal animated series, was that the Addamses themselves did not exist in a vacuum; surrounding them, throughout their town and the world, was a network of individuals, shops, and organizations that shared the same "bizarre" tastes that they did. The Addamses were never non-conformists as such; they honestly thought that most of the world was just like them. This "Addamsian" subculture was, admittedly, quite understated in the tv show, but Charles Addams's original comics portrayed it clearly and delightfully. It's a world of three-armed people, casual magic, ingenious children, multi-species interaction, and, almost always, a sense of the macabre which recognizes itself as nothing but part of the norm. In addition to the Addams Family characters themselves (never actually named in the comics; they were "the Addams family" in the same way that the characters in "Doonesbury" would be called "the Trudeau troupe"), there were other occasional recurring characters, providing a sense of continuity that emphasized Mr. Addams's ongoing theme: everyone and everything is weird, to someone else, somewhere. The only flaw in this book is one that it may not have been originally intended to address (the book was first published years ago, only reissued recently in conjunction with the movie): it's not a complete collection of all the comics featuring the proto-Addamses themselves. Still, the comics of Charles Addams rarely fail to entertain and provoke. Gary Larson and his legion of imitators have never really reached the heights that Charles Addams by and large maintained until his death.

"Suddenly, I have a dreadful urge to be merry."

My Crowd is a collection of some 200 cartoons (most of which are full page) by the comically macabre illustrator Charles Addams. About half of these cartoons focus on the ghoulish family who enjoys the things in life many find to be hideous (like lovely poisonous plants and Ebenezer Scrooge "bless his heart"). This family, who was introduced by Addams in the New Yorker in 1932, spawned the T.V. show named after the artist. The cartoons featuring this family are some of the best ones in this books; from the bratty son hanging up "Bridge Out" and "Blasting Ahead" signs he stole for his bedroom to the proud parents reading a letter from the school about their son's "perverse, crafty, and wanton" behavior, to poor "Lurch" being admonished for not picking up an eye of newt at the grocery store. The father is more freaky than the amorous Gomez of the T.V. show. The drawings of the mother (Morticia in the series, the characters were not given names in the cartoon) are the best. Her body language and expressions are great, even if she is just standing with her arms crossed. Other reoccurring characters, like the handyman who's asked to fix a squeak on a trap door and puts in a window so the family has a delightful view of the cemetery lends the family series even more continuity.

The other cartoons are also often ghoulish but also very witty. Some have no text like the drawing of two unicorns watching in the rain as an arc sails away or an actress screaming directly to the camera on the movie screen while everyone in the audience turns around to see what she's screaming at. Then there is the couple driving past a sign that says "Children At Play" and, ahead of them, you see children ready to push a giant boulder into their path. Another one of my favorites are the prince and princess telling the Medieval marriage counselor they are not "living happily ever after." The cartoons were taken from six books by Charles Addams so, it is probably meant to whet one's appetite around the time of the last Addam's Family movie rather than to be an exhaustive chronicle of Addams' work. If you like dark humor (i.e. Edward Gorey) this book is for you.

Fun as a collectible or as a gift

There is a good mix of the strange and absurd in this book, as well as Addams family - about 50-50. Many pages depict wintery themes with an evil sense of the macabre lurking in the background... A total of 192 pages of wyrd. It gets you thinking about how the indomitable potential of the human spirit. (Spooky!)

Excellent Colouring book for Adults

I was asked if I would like to participate in a colouring book review program, and as I enjoy colouring I accepted.

The printing is sharp with none of the pages looking faded, nor do any appear to be taken out of children's colohring books. The pictures themselves are either of plants or animal motif's, and have a good range in difficulty from fairly simple vases of flowers to more intricate drawings that cover the entire page. This is the type book I like, as sometimes I enjoy taking a long time to do the entire page, and other times I have much less time to complete it. Sure, I sometimes walk away from it before I am finished, but its nice to work on a picture you know you will finish in that period of time.

If you have not tried an adult colouring book, I encourage you to do so. I had not for years until one was given to me, and I found I enjoyed it so much that I bought what I thought was a large set of coloured pencils - it contained 48. (I now wish I had gone for the larger 72, but in truth I have tried colouring these with my old small set of 12 - and it works fine). May not have the range of shades, but it still looks nice. And more importantly, its fun and relaxing. Remember how it was when you were children and colouring was one of your activities? If you liked it then you will like it now - might even encourage you to draw or paint your own pictures. (It has me).

This would be an excellent choice if you are looking for a gift for someone, or if you just want to try adult colouring for yourself.

Make sure to check the book when you receive it, the first one came with missing print. They replaced it for free, and it seems like a ton of fun to color in!

A good introductory read.

I ordered this book for an Education course I was taking in college. It contains a lot of useful information about student motivation as it pertains to school and learning (as the title suggests), although maybe not as in depth as I would have hoped.

If you are a student in a Teaching program, it would be a good introduction into some terminology and definitions regarding student motivation. However, if you are a seasoned professional, it probably won't offer you much insight.

Although it is an easy read, it is a little bit sterile. The examples given in the book seem a bit lackluster and not really engaging.

About the Author

Robert A. Schwartz is Marvin M. Speiser Professor of Finance and University Distinguished Professor in the Zicklin School of Business, Baruch College, CUNY. Before joining the Baruch faculty in 1997, he was Professor of Finance and Economics and Yamaichi Faculty Fellow at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business, where he had been a member of the faculty since 1965. Professor Schwartz received his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University. His research is in the area of financial economics, with a primary focus on the structure of securities markets. He has published over 50 refereed journal articles and fifteen books, including The Equity Trader Course (co-authored with Reto Francioni and Bruce Weber) Wiley & Sons, 2006, Equity Markets in Action: The Fundamentals of Liquidity, Market Structure and Trading (co-authored with Reto Francioni) Wiley & Sons, 2004, and Reshaping the Equity Markets: A Guide for the 1990s, Harper Business, 1991 (reissued by Business One Irwin, 1993). He has served as a consultant to various market centers including the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, the London Stock Exchange, Instinet, the Arizona Stock Exchange, Deutsche B�rse, and the Bolsa Mexicana. From April 1983 to April 1988, he was an associate editor of The Journal of Finance, and he is currently an associate editor of the Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, the Review of Pacific Basin Financial Markets and Policies, and The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance & Business Ventures, and is a member of the advisory boards of International Finance and The Journal of Trading. In December 1995, Professor Schwartz was named the first chairman of Nasdaq's Economic Advisory Board, and he served on the EAB until Spring 1999.
