About the Author
Jim Shaddix currently serves as Dean of the Chapel and Associate Professor of Preaching at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, as well as Pastor-Teacher of Edgewater Baptist Church in New Orleans. He earned a B.S. in Education (1982) from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, a Master of Divinity (1986) and Doctor of Ministry (1992) from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Preaching (1996) from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Jim also is founder and president of Burning Heart Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit ministry organization aimed at equipping pastors and students in the practice of biblical exposition. Jim and his wife, Debra, reside in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Excellent insights for preachers

Why do you preach? A survey of pastors might show a variety of reasons cited as motivation for preachers. Jim Shaddix, however, believes that sermons "should be driven by a passion for the glory of God."
Shaddix, who serves as Dean of the Chapel and Professor of Preaching at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and as pastor-teacher at a New Orleans church, believes that preaching detours from its central purpose when it launches into "the quest to answer all the questions people are asking." Shaddix asks: "What is the role and responsibility of my pastor as a preacher? Did God really commission him to be the dispenser of the infinite number of how-tos necessary for navigating daily life effectively?"
Such a preaching program is not the purpose of preaching, he argues. "Instead, preaching should be driven by a passion for the glory of God, a passion jointly possessed by both pastor and people. . . . A preacher's call to preach is rooted in his call to Christ, and his call to Christ is rooted in a quest for the glory of God."
The central concern then becomes: "How do we preach and listen to preaching in such a way as to bring glory to God in each individual sermon and in the larger preaching ministry of our church?" Shaddix answers that the key is "to rightly expose the mind of the Holy Spirit in every given text of Scripture." The balance of the book offers both theological and practical dimensions to pastoral preaching that is worthy of its calling.
Making the case for expository preaching as foundational to a week-by-week pastoral preaching program, Shaddix takes on those who argue that the preaching of Jesus was based in story, and thus our preaching should adopt the same model. Shaddix answers, "He was the quintessential storyteller, we are reminded, and consequently His approach should be the pattern for modern-day homiletics. The further champion for the bulk of our preaching to be in story form in light of the vast treasury of narrative material which monopolizes biblical literary genre and is the very nature of the four Gospels themselves. . . . These suggestions are shortsighted at best, and they communicate a serious misunderstanding of the nature of pastoral preaching today.
"As heretical as it may seem to some, Jesus is not necessarily the best model for contemporary pastoral preaching. This obviously is not because of any flaw in His homiletic or His theology. Certainly Jesus was the quintessential master communicator and the general model for all preachers of all time. However, we must recognize the fact that He did not practice as the preaching pastor of a local congregation in the same vein as we know the ministry today. His ministry would better serve as a model for itinerant preaching as He engaged different crowds in various settings. Additionally, the content of the majority of His preaching and teaching would more closely parallel evangelistic proclamation as opposed to the edification of believers."

Will help preachers to gain a bigger vision of the glory of God

"Preach the Word" isn't a suggestion but a command from God. The Bible opens with God speaking His Word and creation coming into existence. God uses the preached Word of God to bring sinners from death to life by transforming them from rebels to saints. A lot of articles and books have been written to address the concern that contemporary preaching has gone soft. In his book The Passion Driven Sermon Changing the Way Pastors Preach and Congregations Listen Pastor Jim Shaddix writes to explain that "preaching should be driven by a passion for the glory of God, a passion jointly possesd by both the pastor and the people" (3).
This book is divided into three parts: Part one examines Passion-Driven Scripturology. Part 2 discuses Passion Driven Sheperdology and the final part of the book looks at Passion Driven Sermonology. The one thing that impressed me about this book is rather than giving a formula for "successful" preaching as many books on preaching do the author focuses on what the Word of God teaches about preaching and how preachers are to preach the Word in order to help the people have a big view of God and the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Preaching is high and holy business to God. To preach the Word of God to the people of God is a high and holy privilege In a limited sense every Christian is a preacher. Not every Christian will stand before a congregation or even a small group and deliver a message, but every Christian is a theologian and preacher. Men are called to lead their families, which requires preaching and teaching the Word of God to their families. Every single Christian is called to witness and make disciples for the Lord Jesus. This is why preaching is high and holy business because every single Christian is a theologian and a preacher. Not only do we preach to other people we also preach to ourselves.
One of the most impressive parts of this book is the vision of preaching this book gives. The goal of the author is not just to give an instruction manual chalk full of "how-to" preach but rather to help the preacher to have a bigger vision of God in order to convey the greatness of God in all of His glory to His people. This is the kind of book that you want to read if you are serious about preaching. This book will help you to love the people of God better by serving them not with a pragmatic sermon but with the weightiness of all God teaches in His Word. At the end of the day regardless of your preaching style or preference, the goal of preaching is to proclaim the whole Word of God to the people of God to glory of God in order that they may be equipped to serve God among the nations. This book will help preachers to gain a robust vision of all God is in order to make much of Jesus through the preaching of His Word. I recommend this book to preachers and pray it will be a means the Lord uses to give the people of God, a greater vision of God for His glory.

A Passionately Written Book

The purpose of this book, in the words of the author himself is, `to describe enough of his own journey to inspire more preachers and listeners to be driven by passion for God to be glorified.' In his book, Shaddix also answers the question, `how do we preach and listen to preaching so as to bring glory to God, in individual sermon and in larger preaching ministry in our church?'
The book is organized in a very interesting manner which allows the reader to choose from two ways to read the book. Shaddix also provides a chart in the Introduction section of the book to that effect. The reader may either choose to read in the regular style as the book flows or may choose to skip chapters in between in a structured pattern and come to them later.
Shaddix builds his suggestions to preach and listen to preaching so as to bring glory to God on three components: biblical foundations, philosophical framework and practical implications. Shaddix contends that what we do and believe must have a biblical foundation. He divided the text into three parts and arranged into these parts the three above mentioned components. Part 1, Passion-driven Scripturology, is a study of scriptural foundation for preaching based on Apostle Paul's practice of pastoral preaching which is based on his convictions, as reflected in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5. Part 2, Passion-Driven Shepherdology is a philosophical framework of these convictions. Part 3, Passion-Driven Sermonlogy suggests practical implications for accomplishing the task of glorifying God in preaching and listening to weekly sermons.
Shaddix's style is gimmick-free. He is direct in his approach in that there are no formulas that the reader has to deduce to be informed. The book is visionary in the sense that the reader can visualize as he reads, be it the sections from past when Shaddix writes about Paul's pastoral ministry and his experiences with the Corinthian audiences or be it the future when he talks of the implications of utilizing his suggestions. Preachers at the pulpit and listeners in the pews, alike, can see in their mind's eye, as they read, the glorification of God week after week and how the purpose of preaching and listening to the Word of God is accomplished. There are no `hard-to-do how-tos.' The language is as easy to understand as his suggestions are to implement.
In a theological market that is flooded with `how-to-preach' books, this book certainly tops the list from the standpoint of its organization, style and most importantly, its content. Just as the title suggests, this book brings out the passion in preaching and listening and the reader - both the preacher and the listener - can look at the Word from a new perspective.
Shaddix's role play of pastors is new to this reader. Pastors, according to him, need to play the roles of reporter, reminder and reflector. Most interestingly he notes that preaching is only a means to an end. What matters is the message. And if the presentation overshadows the message itself, the preacher makes `spiritual treason.' Christian communication is different from the culture's perception of communication. This reader agrees with the author that while contemporary techniques of communication like, relational presentations, right-brain and left-brain thinking, oral culture, visual age, etc., may be taken into account and be given their due in preaching, they should never, at any point in the event of preaching `be allowed to reign supreme'. The underlying message of this portion of Shaddix's book is: preaching is to please God and not people. So the presentation or the style of communication should be given more importance than the message itself.
References to Paul and his pastoral ministry make Shaddix's exhortations biblical in nature which makes this book the bible of preaching in the twenty-first century. While most of the literature focusses on addressing issues in preaching, this book devotes equal attention to the people in the pew. Preaching is two-way event in the church. The listener is called to glorify God as much as the preacher is. In other words, magnification of God's voice takes place in the pews as much as it takes place at the pulpit.
It is a `must have book' not only on the preacher's shelf but in every church goer's collection. The practical suggestions will help not only preachers excel at the preaching ministry but also will enable the listener to connect with the preacher through the word of God.
