The five stars keep on coming

Sometimes it's too bad to live in a small European country. You have to wait for these books for so long, and all the rave reviews just are killing you. With seven books down, and waiting eagerly for the eighth, you do get your favourites among them, but compared to what I've read in the Star Wars universe so far, this series all get 5 stars. The Captive Temple ranks among the favourites. It was great to get a glimpse into the Jedi Temple once more. I particularly cheered when I found that they were not automatically the lady-Jedi that were left to care for the Jedi babies. Good for you Watson! You can't say too much about the plot without giving away too much (read the rest of the books too), but once again the characters of Obi Wan and Qui-Gon are hit spot-on, several good characters in the previous books make their re-appearance. Some curious plot turns, a death I hadn't expected. And I couldn't believe how hard the Council was on Obi Wan, though I have an idea that they have a different reason behind that than strictly to make the boy feel punished. I sure hope the upcoming books will lead us back to the Temple one day. Tahl needs to be pushed through the mirror. All those scenes were the Jedi are fighting in the dark, or blindfolded, with obstacles all around, and she needs a droid to help her around? Something has to happen where she realises she can see through the Force, not those eyes, and be a full-fledged Jedi-Knight again.

Some critisism

This book was, at least in my opinion, the most frustrating that there was. As for as the plot goes, the book rocked. Yes true, it should have been longer, ALL the Jedi apprentice books should be, but this is not my point. First, it seems that the character of Obi-wan is being made inferior. I understand that being so young, inexperienced, and just starting his journey to become a Jedi, leaves him slightly incompetent, but in this book especially, it seems that everyone has managed to progress, or are naturally superior to him. And I am not referring to the actual statement (when he himself fears that everyone's progressing, and him standing till) or constant criticism he was getting from the council and mistreatment (like when Mace compliments Bant and scolds him. That I applaud the author on her uncanny ability to reflect adult behavior...a certain subliminal persecution from adults to children who've made then cross). It is already frustrating to read about Anakin's greatness, and how Obi-wan lacked in such superiority as to reach to Anakin's level, but it's hard to believe that one of the greatest Jedi that ever lived seems more like a "mook", and void of all talent. Would it be so hard to bless our hero with an outstanding ability at SOMETHING?...After all, Anakin reflected other talents without the experienced of force, and he was wasn't much younger than Obi-wan was...it's just hard to believe that Obi-wan is good for NOTHING, and lacks any talent- force oriented ones or not. Bant too seems to lend to this. I support the idea of female characters in the "Star Wars" universe, but it seemed that she was the source of all brilliant ideas and good ideology...like all the female characters that appeared in this series, she seems "perfect" (also see Tahl). Funny how the more realistic "scarred" characters are all male, and this "streak of realism" in character is restricted only to our Obi-wan, and immoral characters. While I understand that the author wanted to show us a certain transformation in character, and understanding on Obi-wan's behalf (that he made a mistake by leaving the order), I would have preferred that he reflected some sort of self-insite on the situation...not run to the all knowing Bant for answers. Asides form this, the book's plot kept me on the edge of my seat (even thought it was pretty obvious who the culprits were) and I would recommend it to all who read that series so far, and who enjoy Qui-gon-Obi-wan stories.

Yet another heartbreaker from Watson

Embarrassed about buying a book aimed at the 8-12 age group? Don't be. You're in good company -- and for good reason. Pick up "The Captive Temple," the seventh Jedi Apprentice novel, and find out why.
The Jedi Temple is under attack from within. Mysterious thefts and dangerous acts of sabotage are occurring despite the Council's attempts to stop them. And Obi-Wan Kenobi's dream of becoming a Jedi, the goal toward which he's devoted his life, seems father away than ever. Can he heal the painful rift between himself and Qui-Gon? Will the two of them work together to put an end to the destructive attacks, or will the Temple itself be destroyed from the inside?
Well, obviously, it all turns out all right in another fifteen years or so -- but you won't remember that when reading the book. If you're anything like me, you'll find yourself shouting at the characters to do the right thing, groaning when they make the wrong choice, and wishing Obi-Wan would learn to keep his big mouth shut. :-)
Don't let the "juvenile" trappings fool you: this book, like the others in the series, has some very adult themes. Trust and betrayal, angst, suspicion, guilt -- all can be found in abundance here. The characters are, as always, wracked with inner turmoil. None of it is inappropriate for young readers; it's simply presented in a way that keeps the older audience interested without going over the heads of the under-12 fans.
Though laced with some very dark implications for our heroes, the book maintains a good balance between sobering scenes and well-timed humour. Not once do you get the sense that the author is talking down to you; Watson may use shorter words and less complicated sentences than, say, Greg Bear, but she doesn't skimp on the plot and character elements that we've so come to enjoy. "The Captive Temple" will have you on the edge of your seat, racing for the end and simultaneously wishing it would never come. This one is highly recommended.

Mixed bag

This is a charming salute to the many Spanish and Italian fashion designers of the past century. As always Mr Tierney's drawings are of the highest standard, and I especially liked the striking Latin features of the dolls. Unfortunately the lack of accuracy lets this collection down. A Balenciaga creation is credited to Pertegaz, some costumes are incorrectly dated, and Gianni Versace's work is represented by a costume design for an opera, when this is supposed to be a collection of fashion designs. A number of outfits aren't typical of the particular designer's work (eg Gigli, Ferre, Fontana, etc). Most puzzling of all is the inclusion of people whose ethnic descent is either Spanish or Italian, but their careers and businesses were established in other countries (eg Emanuel Ungaro, John Galliano, Elsa Schiaparelli, Nina Ricci, to name a few. Even Oscar de la Renta, an American designer born in the Dominican Republic is included!). Mr Tierney is still a great graphic artist, but his research has let him down in this instance.

Growing up in the early-eighteenth century as the privileged only child of a household slave and her plantation owner on a tiny West Indian island, Joseph Boulogne heard music from around the globe, and he learned to play violin. After his father took him and his mother to Paris, Boulogne lived free, although he still suffered discrimination as a �mulatto.� As he grew up, he became a gifted, feted student who was taught by two great masters and given a beautiful instrument before he played first violin with a Paris orchestra and eventually became its conductor. By 30, he was a star, the first musician of color to play for royalty and a renowned composer. An author�s note fills in more facts, but unfortunately, there are no sources included in this picture-book biography about a figure rarely featured in books for youth. The full-page, richly colored paintings give a strong sense of the changing settings, from plantation to palace, but most moving are the close-ups of the extraordinary musician with his fingers on the violin strings. An Excellent Book

I have read "Before There Was Mozart" at least three times. I bought one for myself and one for my grandson. As a former school counselor who helped counselees to start thinking about careers, stepping out on courage, embracing racial indifferences, believing in yourself, the importance of encouragement, how to be persistent and courageous, find ways to be uniquely different, etc., I find this book to be an excellent tool for ages six years to adult. It's great for parents to learn the importance of positive words spoken into the lives of their children, also. I love this book. It is on my coffee table and made available for anyone who visits me to read. My forty-one (41) years old son introduced me to this book. I love it! It is a Christmas gift that I will be sharing with many loved ones this year.

Beautifully illustrated and a well told story! Excellent read for ages 5 and up. Adults who want there children to be introduced to the complexity of western history will enjoy reading and sharing this book with their children.

My piano teacher loved this book as did I. We were both so pleased to learn of this young man's plight and his tremendous success considering the circumstances of his birth and life. Thank you for sharing this book with music lovers. We will share it with all of the children and even adults in our sphere of influence.

I just wish the book was physically larger. Some of the illustrations were difficult to see. The content is excellent and useful. We are in the tractor business and all of our techs should have a copy. I recommend this book highly!

Good detailed and thorough book

Although I am using this text for a college class, this book would be great for anyone that just desires to understand and gain more knowledge on diesel engines in general and the science, practicality and overall function of diesel engines and tractors in general. I have really learned a lot by reading this book. It is very thorough and in-depth but delivers information in an understandable and approachable reading.
