probably meant for 3-4 year olds.

I felt this book was easier than I hoped it would be. I originally bought it for my 1st grader to see roughly how he might do when GATE tested this year. When he blew through it, I gave it to my 4 year old who also completed it easily by himself. It was a bit expensive so I was hoping that there would be challenges that we could discuss and work through together. However, I give it 5 stars anyway because the boys enjoyed it and it kept their attention. If you think your child is developing for the magnet program, I would recommend this book for 3-4 year olds.

I and my son really like the this book

I and my son really like the this book. I am trying to help my 4 year old son get ready for his g&t exam. I like the fact that the questions in here to make him think. We have been doing section by section. It's colorful and he enjoys doing it. It is so important to get him familiar with questions. I think that helps a lot. I also bought the NNAT book from this publisher. I would recommend this.

Incredibly expensive for what you get...I paid about $25. My 4 year old loved the questions but also said that these questions were not like the ones she had on the actual g&t test.

Full of Helpful, Subtle Guidance

I enjoyed this book a lot, as someone who recently finished a Big Thing of my own and is trying to find the courage to start another. Many of the author's struggles really resonated with me: how to establish a routine to work on a large, initially formless project, how to deal with the anxiety that the thing in reality will never be as good as it was in your imagination, how to integrate this secret life of creative work with the need to earn a living.

Some reviewers seem to have been annoyed that this wasn't more of a step-by-step, how-to guide, or irked that the author talked too much about herself. But these objections seem to me to miss the point of the book: That no one can give you a set of instructions like that, because the only way to learn to do a thing like this is to actually do it. Korkki shows us "how" in the only possible way one can, by example.

I Wanted to Love this Book

Phyllis Korkki has written a book that is mostly about Phyllis Korkki. It should have been a memoir. It’s not a self-help book. The scattered examples of other people who have successfully accomplished their “big thing” are interesting and done via professional interviews that were much easier for her to get than the average person who is not employed full-time by the New York Times. That Korkki is technically a good writer and editor is obvious, but that is just not enough to save this book.

I am the perfect reader for The Big Thing, having successfully completed NaNoWriMo twice, and going on a year staring into space, beaten down, lazy and unproductive for my true BIG THING. Where’s my motivation?! How do I get back on track? Should I just give up or beat myself up? Can this BIG THING really be saved? I got no answers from Phyllis Korkki and only became motivated to write this review.

A classic... nothing else comes close

The definitive thing you need to have if you're a mushroom lover. Maybe not in your backpack or hip pocket, but at basecamp for those rare gems that nothing else works. Exhaustive complete work, I thought I could get by without it owning it myself. Unless you're a mushroom savant, and memorized all of the obscurities and rarities, beyond the typical things you normally find you'll appreciate this! Such a classic, love the epic stories of mushroom culture and the hunt too. Might be a bit much to chew for neophytes, but is still accessible with room to grow into the hobby.

The most comprehensive mushroom books for people who are serious about 'wanting to know' mushrooms!

Recently a friend took a photo of a mushroom she found while hiking that no other books illustrated. I was able to relatively easily locate this mushroom in David Arora's book and use the key to narrow it down to one of two species. Aurora's other book "All That The Rain Promises" is a nice 'lightweight' version of this book for people that want to tip only their big toes into the waters of mycology before 'diving in' headfirst. If you do want to go 'head on' fully into the study of mushrooms, then this 'heavyweight'(literally and figuratively) book is the one for you.

Personally, I am not yet into the binomial key level of ID for the most part and mostly look at photos in this book and ask those more experienced than myself for ID assistance. I hear that Aurora is working on an updated version of this book. I use this book in conjunction with about 10 other mushroom books to compare photos and information!
