Excellent book!

Finally I got a hold of this book! Great floor plans; but as usual, I would have liked more interior pics (hardly any).

Poor quality images; not as "fabulous" as expected.

I had such hopes for this book. New York is like my second home. And being a bit of an architecture buff I admire many of the buildings in the city, so I was excited to get this. However that bubble quickly burst. The description read (and still does) "magnificently illustrated." That's rather overstated. To me that means I was to expect copious amounts of interior photos (or at least renderings), exterior photos, and of course, floor plans. Lots of floor plans? Check. "Magnicificent" illustrations/photos? NOPE!

Many of those `glorious' floor plans are very poor quality. Understandably the majority of them are quite old, however that doesn't negate the fact that so very many of them look like photocopies of photocopies of photocopies of faxes of photocopies. You know what I mean; those documents that you can tell have been copied a million times & end up fuzzy and where things just sort of bleed together. The title of Peter S.'s review sums things up nicely.

Some of the buildings descriptions are very short, providing only the most basic information (year blt, number of orig units, architect, etc), with only a single photo or rendering of the exterior.

All-in-all I think this is a big let-down. Found for a major Amazon bargain it's worth it to have as a reference, but otherwise it's a waste in my opinion.

Fabulous indeed!

This book provides a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era that actually lasted only a few decades, from say the 1890's to the 1930's.

This work is thoroughly enjoyable though somewhat demanding since it is essentially made up of not-so-large scale floor plans with only short written introductions. One is left to imagine the residents' lives before the Depression, with live-in servants and frequent parties, as well as their rather sudden demise that led to most apartments being broken up in the following decade into two, three or even four distinct units. Many buildings were actually completely gutted and some demolished.

A few floor plans of 1960's buildings are included however and comments provided have become quaint in their na�ve appreciation of modernism.

Given the abundance of illustrations and the enormous research that was certainly required, this book is an incredible bargain at the price asked. It is very strongly recommended to anyone interested in New York and its way of life.

Here, Mele draws on work in social and developmental psychology and in psychiatry to motivate a view of human behavior in which both backsliding and overcoming the temptation to backslide are explicable. He argues that backsliding is no illusion and our theories about the springs of action, the power of evaluative judgments, human agency, human rationality, practical reasoning, and motivation should accommodate backsliding.

About the Author

Alfred R. Mele is the William H. and Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy at Florida State
University. He is the author of six previous OUP books: Irrationality (1987), Springs of Action (1992), Autonomous Agents (1995), Motivation and Agency (2003), Free Will and Luck (2006), and Effective Intentions (2009). He also is the editor of The Philosophy of Action (OUP 1997) and a coeditor of four other OUP volumes: Mental Causation (1993), The Oxford Handbook of Rationality (2004), Rationality and the Good (2007), and Free Will and Consciousness: How Might They Work? (2010).

An accessible account of Al Mele's writing on will-power over the last two decades.

It was good. If you are interested in academic work on weakness of will, you should read it.

Of special note is the shift from "strict akratic action" in Mele's seminal 1987 Irrationality and toward the slightly modified "core akratic (or weak-willed) action." Core akratic action includes the earlier "free intentional action against the agents own better judgment" but clarifies that the action be "sane," "based on practical reasoning," and that the agent be "non-depressed." Here Mele is both shoring up his position against criticism and positioning his view rhetorically as the central account.

Mele addresses the common language controversy between himself and Richard Holton. He is less than thorough about it and so the argument is only somewhat persuasive. But, the dispute made is clear.

The section on free-will is aimed at avoiding a full blown account of free action, but is still moderately technical. Not a good primer on free will, but a fair accounting of how to discuss weakness of will without such an account. Mele draws together lots of his previous work.

By far the most exciting element of the book is the chapter explaining "backsliding" or the process of failing to act on a reasoned judgment about what all things considered ought to be done. This section is a very helpful synthesis of Mele's previous work into a compelling account of practical rationality and failure.

Mele ends by discussing some of the results described in Baumeister's recent book Willpower.

All in all, this is a good book, well written and packed with connections between more tightly argued articles.

Hot Ball of Lead

While this is certainly an erudite and illuminating exploration of J.M. Coetzee's literary catalog, it is misleading to call it an introduction. From the book's introduction to each section that is devoted to a particular novel Dominic Head's exploration is always based upon a comprehensive overview of all of Coetzee's work. He cannot talk about one novel without referencing the rest of the novels. Head's insight is dependent upon being intimately familiar with Coetzee's entire catalog. If you are not well versed in all his selections you will find yourself gleaning the left over crumbs of Head's wisdom about Coetzee and unable to participate fully in his astute observations. However if you're a sincere admirer of Coetzee's work you'll need some grounding to maximize your understanding of the sublime genius he has gifted the world in his novels. This is the most accessible and complete companion I have thus far been able to find.

Coetzee is an extraordinarily challenging author. When I read Disgrace, I was scarcely able to turn a page without having to look up a word or a South African cultural reference I was unfamiliar with. I find myself wrestling with the concepts and ideas put forth in Coetzee's work long after the novel is finished. I found The Lives of Animals amazing, but was confounded when it was placed in the larger context of Elizabeth Costello. I feel that Waiting For the Barbarians is the most important and densely layered, yet shortest novel ever written about imperialism. As fascinated as I am with Coetzee's work there is much in the way of cultural references that pass me by unawares. Additionally, Coetzee himself is such a well-read scholar that even the most voracious bibliophile might not catch all of his literary allusions without some assistance.

This "introduction" does unveil some of those references and concepts that may have alluded you on your first perusal of a particular novel, and I enjoyed reading it as a guide to Coetzee's work. In my opinion the two flaws with this collection are that it is not really an introduction as it claims for people new to Coetzee's work, and the very short length of the entire work, and in particular the sections devoted to each of the novels. There is a lot more room for discovery and discussion for each of the novels than what is covered in this collection, and in that sense it is truly an introduction.

If you have access to a online research libraries through a University, I would also suggest reading literary criticisms of Coetzee's works to further enhance your understanding and participate in the dialogue Coetzee initiates in his novels. I've found reading Coetzee to be like the Zen aphorism of "drinking a hot lead ball that you can neither swallow or spit out." And in that spirit, this collection is a kind of mental Alka Seltzer to aid in your intellectual digestion.

His loveletter to his homeland

During a couple of tours of the UK there were always unanswered questions about the sheep: why so many, what are the different kinds, is the wool of any use, do they really eat that much lamb, etc. This collection of essays does so much to explain the whys and wherefores. It's technical enough to satisfy the biologists among us while covering the historical and traditional and even romantic reasons for the continued presence in such numbers both of sheep and shepherds. The man is deeply in love with his countryside and its traditions and he writes so well. It enriches the experiences of the past tours and should be read before one goes. A lovely read.

More sheep in this book than the wolly kind

Lauds the simple life, goes hard as anti-academic, then becomes one, then bails back to the farm. An odd mixture of hypocrisy and consistency. Paints a beautiful romantic and exclusive picture of living and working close to the land. A story worth telling but it is a view of the landscape through an opaque tunnel where livestock are lauded beyond a station the public might be willing to award them. It has overtones of the same moral framework that nature-blinded environmentalists, western US cattlemen, and imminent domain developers display. Within their purview, their argument for human-hill sheep-pasture resonates. The love of their framework is beautiful though and this makes it well worth reading. Rebanks turns some beautiful and compelling phrases that occasionally reminded me of Wendell Berry (big praise!). As an academic and an outdoor educator though, I found his belaboring experiential learning over the classroom teaching slightly irresponsible and mildly depressing. The magic cocktail is some mix of each I think. He fortunately escaped through books, as did I, but many students excel with either or both and if generations of school-sneering kids (as I saw in the Deep South of the US) are required to keep the ag system intact there, I have to wonder if it is worth it. Ignorance should not be celebrated. So, a beautiful, romantic book of nature with some troubling barbs embedded. What will he write next?
The concept of a tamed landscape with exotic grasses, rock walls, sheep evolving into symbionts, and humans as the conductors of all of this rings of a God complex where all but markets and weather are controlled.

He earned his B.Sc, M.Sc, and Ph.D from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in collaboration with LAAS, Toulouse, France. From 2004 to 2009, he participated as principal researcher in multiple European and national research projects. Between 2004 and 2010, he also collaborated with numerous universities and technical institutes as visiting-adjunct professor. Dr. Noulis has more than 30 publications in journals, conferences, and book chapters. He holds one French and one world patent. His work has received more than 50 citations. He is an active reviewer of international journals and has given multiple invited presentations. In addition, his research activity has been awarded by various conferences and research organizations.
