Casty is the man!

Did you know Mickey Mouse was an Indiana Jones style adventurer and crime-busting detective? I certainly didn't as a kid. I preferred the more anarchic, blue collar charms of Bugs Bunny and Popeye, but a couple of years ago I discovered Carl Barks and Don Rosa (purveyors of Scrooge and Donald comic books) and eventually Mickey Mouse newspaper strip artist Floyd Gottfredson, and discovered how cool the unique and distinct world of Disney comics was. Recently, all the classic Disney comic book series have resumed publication under IDW Publishing, with the emphasis on foreign-made comics that are new to the USA.
... and this is a great trade paperback collection of the new Mickey Mouse comics because it contains two long stories by Andrea "Casty" Castellan! I'm pretty confident in saying that, since Don Rosa retired in '08, Casty is now the best creator of Disney comics working today! His work feels fresh and modern, but at the same time deeply rooted in the classics. If you love Gottfredson's Mickey, I think you'll find a loving continuation with Casty's. In 'Gift of the Sun Lord' (written by Casty and drawn by Giorgio Cavazzano) Mickey and Goofy travel to South America to assist original Casty creation Eurasia Toft in investigating possible involvement by 'ancient aliens' with Mayan civilization. What they do discover is clever spin on such History channel claptrap. In 'Plan Dine From Outer Space' (written and drawn by Casty) we have a much more straightforward science fiction tale, with Mickey and Eega Beeva (a wacky yet underused character from the Gottfredson era) traveling through space to search from Earth's missing moon and discover something that's kinda sorta a spin on Marvel Comics' Galactus.
The only misstep here, in my opinion, is the inclusion of "The Ghost of Man Eater Mountain." It's a reprint of an American comic book story from the '50s, which is serviceable... but fairly unremarkable. A few of these serviceable but unremarkable older American stories have been printed in the IDW's new Mickey Mouse, and they really pale in comparison to the Italian stories that that have been the relaunched book's main focus. I feel the primary reason for their inclusion is just nostalgia, as they certainly don't hold up in the way a Carl Barks Donald Duck story from the '40s or a Floyd Gottfredson Mickey newspaper strip from the '30s do.
