Waited so long.

I have waited and waited for this book and I finally got it. Not only did I get it, it was also signed as well as a pencil sketch done by the Producer and Creator. As I write this I am attending the 2014 San Diego Comic Con. I was so stoked. Anyway, the book not just discusses the film but is very transparent in detailing the process. Even down to giving the color codes of the characters like their eye lash color. Very cool and detailed. If you get your hands on one get it. This will be one that the resale value will remain solid. That's if you'd want to give up this classic gem.

A must have for any art fanatics

A beautiful book and a comprehensive one at that too! While some art books end up focusing on one aspect of it's respective movie, 'Desiging the Secret of Kells' explores not only how the creators painstakingly captured its beautiful art style, but also looks into character design, production process, story boarding and writing, and much more. From the caption and footnotes in the book tells how much the creators are passionate about and love this masterpiece. Just flipping through this book was a joy. You have to read it to believe it. :>

Most refreshing way to learn about nutrition

This book is written from a Biblical perspective, by a doctor who has studied in-depth the topic of nutrition and how it affects your health. Having read numerous diet and nutrition books, this book is absolutely the most refreshing. It is not a diet book, but a way of thinking about how nutrition intertwines with your spiritual life and your health.

The chapters are fairly short and simple to read, but pack a powerful amount of knowledge and examples that are thought-provoking. The book is set up similar to a Bible study, if you choose, with questions and thoughts at the end of each chapter to engage you and cause you to interact with the material.

It is NOT legalistic in its approach to nutrition and changes. One of my favorite parts of the book is a suggestion of small, simple, week-by-week adaptions you can make to your current lifestyle. These are a realistic "how-to". Dr. Scott Stoll is a man of integrity and follows his own advice with his family. His web site has wonderful information; participating in a webcast or conference will also be invaluable to you.

This book would make a great Sunday School class study which could be done in about 8 weeks (each chapter is a "day", giving you five "days"/chapters each week).

Incredible Resource for Parents!

What a brilliant resource with so many practical ways to teach math. John writes in such an engaging way and is so thorough. This book covers the when, what, why and how of teaching a young child math. Truly packed full of information, examples, resources and suggestions. This is worth so much more than it's selling for!

I genuinely recommend this (and his other books) to every parent who wants to teach their children in an effective, practical, & affordable way.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. As with John Bowman's other books it is practical and easy to implement at home. The best part is that there are so many ideas of items I can use instead of buying expensive equipment and tools.

The book is well written with lots of pictures to illustrate concepts. John also offers loads of links to other resources, apps and free printables. I would say that this book is a must have for anyone who would like to teach a child Math.

Maybe Teach your 3-5 year old bits of math if you want to do all the work.

I'm revising this review based on a reply from the author to my original post and 1 star review. I appreciate greatly Mr Bowman reaching out to me, explaining the aim of the book and offering to refund my money. It's nice seeing an author so personally engaged, whether positive or negative. So I've added a star for that. But I gave it one star originally because Amazon describes one star as "I hate it" and that is truly how I feel about this book and the false expectations created from the item description on Amazon. Perhaps I should have mentioned my 5 yr old is in a Montessori school so I am familiar with many of the methods in this book. I don't see how this book could "... give a complete Montessori math program at home" over 2-3 yrs based on what I've seen in the class. I didn't expect that I'd have to buy so many items with a good percentage being expensive Montessori materials and then that I'd have to make all these projects to teach my 2-5 yr old bits of math (the projects are pretty basic for 6-7yr olds). The photos look old and it's a snore to read. I do think there are better Montessori math books that are easier to follow. A better title in my opinion should be "Some Montessori Methods & Projects to Supplement Your 2-5yr Old's Math Concepts".

There is some good information in this, although not as much as I had hoped. The biggest disappointment is the very poor formatting. This is not formatted for Kindle, and several sections are unintelligible as a result. Do not buy unless this is reformatted and updated.

It is so refreshing to find an essential oils reference that uses science and sound research to support the use of essential oils. The author is obviously knowledgeable about the uses and PRECAUTIONS of EOs adoring pregnancy. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a guide to which oils are safe during pregnancy and what their uses are.

This volume brings together the era's classic works, with more than a hundred selections from a broad range of sources - including works by Kant, Diderot, Voltaire, Newton, Rousseau, Locke, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison, and Paine - that demonstrate the pervasive impact of Enlightenment views on philosophy and epistemology as well as on political, social, and economic institutions. Included are seminal discourses on science and religion, on the social contract, on the equality (and inequality) of the sexes and the races, and on economics and markets, as well as homages to nature and sexual pleasure, and poetry and opera librettos that embody the movement's social ideals.

About the Author
Isaac Kramnick was born in 1938 and educated at Harvard University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1965, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, Yale and Cornell, where he is now Professor of Government. He is married to Miriam Brody Kramnick and lives in Ithaca, New York. Among his publications are Bolingbroke and His Circle, The Rage of Edmund Burke and numerous articles on eighteenth century topics. He has edited William Godwin’s Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and, with Michael Foot, The Thomas Paine Reader for the Penguin Classics. Most recently he is the author, with Barry Sheerman, MP, of Laski: A Lift on the Left.

Dry,..but readable

Okay, what can I say about this book. It’s a challenge reading the writings of the Enlightenment. They tend to be somewhat superannuated. Part of this is because being children of the Enlightenment we tend to take their principles and premises for granted; they are woven into the fabric of our Western consciousness and part of our intellectual heritage. To align yourself with Enlightenment thought several centuries ago was a risky business. It took a certain bravery to publish these works. Today, Enlightenment thought continues to inform our sensibilities and to shape our thoughts. And although the gale force winds of the Enlightenment have today subsided into near imperceptible breezes, they once shook kingdoms and thrones, and caused miters and scepters to tremble.
Most of the men who wrote and contributed to Enlightenment were what was called, ‘natural philosophers’. These men would lay the foundation for what is today modern science and its myriad of associated disciplines,...Biology, Physics, Epistemology, etc.
Now I have to say that as much as I acknowledge the value of these historical antecedents to modern thought I find the writings themselves to be somewhat dry, pedantic, desiccated and jejune. And frankly, some, just out and out boring.
The one writer whom I found to be an exception is Voltaire. Voltaire’s wit, wisdom, and satire can still make you smile and laugh. A restorative and welcome tonic in contrast to much of the Enlightenment writing.

Anthology of Brilliant Minds

Perhaps the best of the "Portable" series by Viking-Penguin. The book covers the Enlightenment period from approximately 1650 through 1800, and is superbly edited by Isaac Kramnick. Covering such luminaries as Voltaire, Kant, Hume, Locke, Rousseau, Jefferson, Pope, Montesquieu, Franklin, Paine, Bentham, Adam Smith and a score of lesser known philosophers and writers; the book hits on major elements of the era - religion, politics, liberty, race, gender and slavery - among others.

Within these 700 or so pages, the book provides the reader with an introduction to the Enlightenment and does so in such a way that there's an appreciation as to the role of this unique era in the foundation of our modern society. The selection of readings were both famous and obscure, but the reader is not left feeling that they didn't get a fair shake at the real elements of the philosophy that fueled the American and French revolutions, led to the establishment of the modern Western democracy, and continues to serve as a foundation of modern political and ethical thought.

If there is one book for every student to read before they leave high school, or certainly college, it is this one. A must read.

A superb collection

Many historical anthologies focus upon a single theme and thus fail to provide their readers with an adequate range of sources. Yet Isaac Kramnick's Enlightenment Reader avoids this pitfall. This book will introduce you to the key texts of the period - in addition to many delightful works of which you may never have heard.

Readers looking for pure philosophy will not be disappointed: the anthology contains a fine selection of excerpts from Bacon, Descartes, Leibnitz, Newton, Hume, Kant, and others. But the Enlightenment embodied more than abstract speculation, and Kramnick skillfully arranges sections on science, religion, art, morality, education, history, politics, economics, crime, war, gender, and race.

Each topic draws upon a diverse array of authors. This gives the reader a sense of the popularity of Enlightenment thought, as well as its development from the middle of the seventeenth century to the start of the nineteenth. Intellectual giants like Voltaire, Rousseau, and Locke appear alongside a gallery of lesser-known but fascinating figures: Nicolas de Condorcet, mathematician and revolutionary terrorist; William Godwin, anarchist and lover of Mary Wollstonecraft; Olympe de Gouges, early feminist playwright; John Cleland, author of the scandalous Fanny Hill - a vital source for the study of eighteenth-century sexuality, and still hilarious after 270 years.

Any collection as ambitious as Kramnick's is bound to have a few faults. The most glaring omission is George Berkeley, whose philosophy of radical skepticism makes no appearance. A few texts from writers outside of the Enlightenment tradition - I'm thinking of Goethe, Herder, and the Marquis de Sade - would have rounded out the reader's sense of the diversity of eighteenth-century thought. That said, I know Penguin has commissioned another volume in this series, on Romanticism, so I expect that some of these 'Counter-Enlightenment' authors will feature in the coming volume.

These are all petty quibbles. If you are looking for a fresh and thorough introduction to the Western Enlightenment, Isaac Kramnick's Enlightenment Reader is the ideal place to start. This compendium brings to life one of the most important periods in the history of Europe and its colonies: you will find that the great men and women of the eighteenth century were just that - men and women - and yet no less great for their humanity. I am extremely pleased with my purchase, and I am confident that you will feel the same.

Not so exciting.

ok I read book one and loved it so I immediately added book two to my wish list. so when a friend gave me my gift card I ordered this book and couldn't wait to read it. Well I started reading and it was doing ok but I kept waiting for more. they dragged out the romance hinted at gang violence but never solved who broke in her home. had the twist of a murder but it was way to obvious. I felt like this was a basic novel with too many open ends and I lost interest. I did read the whole book in hopes of some thrills but just never got them. sorry I usually like this author but we'll this one is an exception.

I love the story. The characters were deep and flawed and enjoyed reading about them, seeing them work through their issues. The suspense and grand finale, everything was great.

There's a lot of useful information here

There's a lot of useful information here. There's a lot of seemingly less-useful information as well (for example, very rudimentary charts that offer the simplest information on the US's trade relations with lots and lots of different countries). But it's basically free of the rah-rah pep talk stuff that often comes with this sort of guide book, and that makes it easier to read.
