Egyptian Colloquial Arabic Verbs
By tracksmith
I have studied Modern Standard Arabic in the past and now wish to concentrate on the Egyptian spoken dialect, because I have visited there and mostly knew MSA. I wish to return and this time be able to speak to Egyptians in their dialect as much as possible.
I have not found a book before that shows the conjugation of Egyptian Arabic verbs until I came across this one. One of the things that I like about the book is that it shows the actual Arabic script, along with the Latin transliteration, and even more importantly in the transliteration, which syllable you stress. The book also points out to a website where you can download zip audio files. There is a pronunciation guide and a section on the rules of stress on the words. The book also shows the negation of these verbs as well. And by the way, there is a separate book for the exercises. I am happy to have this book. Anyone who wants to consider studying or already has learned some Egyptian Arabic, this book is a must to have. I am glad i decided to purchase it.

Mostly good info, but could use some improvement.
By Linguist2be
While this book has many good points, especially the conjugation of verbs, my big gripe is the author's lack of explanation of some things.
For example, he lists verbs in different 'measure' groups, but fails to explain what these measures mean, or why one verb goes into one measure and not another.
So unless you know what all these things mean, it just makes it unnecessarily confusing.
I'll just use the book for the verb conjugations and not worry about the other things that the author doesn't make very clear.
Other than these flaws, it is a pretty good book with a lot of helpful info.
A revision I'd like to make to my original critique is a suggestion. I'd like to see multiple verbs listed for each conjugation form.
For example, if you go to the verb pattern 1s2, the author is using the verb 'to write' as the main example, but it would be helpful
to see a list on that page of some other verbs that follow that pattern. Obviously, not just for that pattern, but throughout the entire book.
Each conjugation would have a main verb as an example, and a list of other verbs that use that same pattern.

I am glad I bought this book!

I am really glad I bought this book. I was hesitant at first because I have purchased educational Arabic books in the past that really did not address my "sticking point" which was preventing me from progressing in my attempts to learn Arabic. I did not want the expense of yet another book. However, after going to the "lingualism" web site, and having a "look inside" on "amazon" I decided to take the risk. After receiving the books (I purchased both the Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) Verbs Conjugation Tables and Grammar, and the ECA Verbs Exercise Book) I was really happy with my decision.
This book explains in a concise manner all the verb forms and their uses. To give you an idea: the base verb form is explained, as well as measures, sound, irregular, hollow, defective, and germinate verbs. Arabic verbs can be so-o-o confusing with all of their intricacies of prefixes, suffixes, internal vowel changes, etc. Even though I could understand the basic patterns, I would always end up in a muddle wondering if I would ever be able to sort it all out. Finally, with "lingualism's ECA Verbs", I am starting to get a clearer picture of how everything works. Even if you can't understand everything exactly, this book makes it so easy you don't really need to, because it shows you!
There are extensive, easy to read tables showing examples of all of the verb forms, all of them! The tables have the complete conjugation of the verb examples including the negatives. That is 76 words for most verbs!! These words are written in both English letters and Arabic letters, the "root" letters are in a lighter ink so you can easily see how the word changes form according to usage. These tables are exceedingly useful! The indexes in the back of the book give you several ways of finding a verb, and these verbs are identified in such a way so you will know which pattern they follow making it very easy, by using the tables, to know exactly how conjugate a particular verb. And!! This book has a lot of useful verbs!
So sorry for being so wordy, I guess you can tell I can't say enough "good stuff" about my experience with this book, and "lingualism"; I highly recommend this book! And, I did not even tell you about the useful grammar explanations, pronunciation guides, and other info. Nor did I tell you about the free MP3 downloads, which are really good, and helpful! Also, I did not let you know anything about the ECA Exercise Book---which is really, really good, too..... I saved that for another review!
